Gold and Silver Bullion Auctions

Gold and Silver Bullion Auctions: Sell Your Gold or Silver at Auction (Live or Online) with Central Mass Auctions

Often referred to as ingots or bars of gold or silver, bullion has eternal value.  Because the value of precious metals doesn’t depend on the strength of a particular currency or of the stock market, bullion is a safe long-term investment.  Of course, it also has barter value throughout the world, and value as a bequest to one’s family.

As with most items that hold multiple layers of value, gold and silver bullion is valuable to collectors.  Bullion collectors usually collect gold or silver (or both) for practical reasons and as hobbyists.  Like coins, gold and silver ingots often have beautiful engravings to complement the natural glow of the pure metal.  Some collectors like to acquire ingots from a wide range of bullion producers or mints, or a variety of issues from the same producer or mints.

What determines the value of your gold or silver bullion at auction?

  • As you might guess, weight is the main determinant of value.  Often measured in terms of Troy ounces, the weight tells you how much melt value your bullion has, as determined by the price of gold or silver on the day you sell it.
  • The purity of bullion varies little from one ingot to another, but it can vary and therefore is a factor in the value of your bullion.
  • A bar of gold or silver can be produced and dealt either by a private company or by a mint (i.e. by a government).  Well-known producers include Engelhard, Credit Suisse, and the Royal Canadian mint.  The producer doesn’t affect the melt value of bullion, but often it’s easier to sell an ingot from a well-known producer.
  • The condition of gold or silver bullion does not affect its melt value, but does affect its aesthetic appeal to a would-be buyer.
  • Assay card. The presence of an assay card helps confirm the authenticity of the bullion, and makes it easier to sell in a timely manner.

Gold and silver dealers tend to lowball sellers, so in general you are more likely to get the full value of your bullion by selling it elsewhere.

Can you sell gold and silver bullion in an online auction?

Yes.  We have sold many gold and silver ingots, including most recently at our October 2020 online auction from an Orange, MA estate.  We take the same pains to appraise, photograph, and inventory the pieces, and to promote the auction, as we do for our live auctions.  In the COVID era our clients and bidders have found online auctions to be a convenient venue.
